Peig Sayers was no demon. She was a storyteller, with a skill in the telling.
Her words likely never should have been on a curriculum for teenagers.
In our shop, we are privileged to know about the people who still want to hear her story...

We meet the people who had a hard time with languages in school (or just school in general), who have kids or grandkids speaking Irish, who want to reconnect with the language that is rightfully theirs. To give it a go.
They give Peig Sayers' words the time of day, which they could never have done in their youth, whether in Irish, or in the translated form (both generally less craic than what Sayers would have been like – other people controlled what ended up enshrined in ink on paper).
Increasingly, we are seeing folks in their late teens and early twenties getting in touch and looking for these books as well.
They've heard the horror stories – and they know damn well it can't be as bad as some people say.

Peig Sayers has been a scapegoat for some people's hatred of a school subject, of a living language, of Irish speakers – or a combination of all three.
And it's nothing to do with Sayers herself.
And it's nothing to do with Sayers herself.
I don't know if she would have wanted the biography 'Peig' to turn out how it did – but she didn't have control of it (others transcribed, edited, marketed it; taught it, defaced it, damned and cursed it).
I reckon she would have much preferred telling it to you herself.

Have you heard her?

New Island Books ( @NewIslandBooks) published a phenomenal book in 2009 'Labharfad le Cách / I Will Speak to You All' including two CDs of her recordings, with transcriptions and translations.
It sold out completely, and we're lucky if we see a copy in passing these days.

@murchadhmor and @gingeripod have just unleashed 'Barr an Chrainn' with audio taken from the CD accompanying 'Labharfad le Cách / I Will Speak to You All''.
And @NewIslandBooks have just released a new book called 'Níl Deireadh Ráite / Not the Final Word'.
A fitting title. Peig Sayers' legacy is not fading.
We are finding her voice again – her own voice. Go gcloise muid í.
