There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about whether or not it is ok for a junior to reach out to a former boss/mentor for advice. As a certified “old guy” senior leader, let me assure you it is not only ok, I welcome it. 1/4
I frequently hear: “That senior is so busy I don’t want to bother her/him.” Listen up! You are not bothering us. One of senior leaders most important responsibilities is to coach and mentor the next generation of Army leaders. 2/4
This week someone heard I was in town and reached out to see if I had a few minutes. We talked for 35 minutes—he had some really timely and valuable feedback. I got the chance to answer some thoughtful questions. 3/4
The officer thanked me afterwards for all the time we spent, and for offering some coaching. It was me who was most thankful: I walked away knowing the Army’s future is in good hands with the likes of this professional and authentic future senior leader. 4/4
