There are few dreaded rituals in public service, but perhaps none more pronounced than #GCWCC. /thread
Every year, teams of public servants are summoned to drum up a variety of departmental activities like policy wonk-themed trivia, awkward networking, and myriad of mini-competitions, to sell a campaign experience that is any more than moribund.
Poor unfortunate souls pulling the short straw voluntold to canvass their branches and secretariats to drone around work cubicles sharing the GCWCC gospel and panhandle for donations in secular offertory.
An unending slew of department-wide emails and notifications, cluttering our inboxes and Intranet real estate, with ceaseless reminders on how important and easy it is to give.
And for all the sour that these campaigns have left me in my short public service career, as strange as it is, I miss those inane interactions, those geeky team competitions, stampeding through those buffet potlucks in search for the best grub.
Reflecting back on these past few months, I am reminded of how sorely I miss those impromptu in-person collisions, yet how lucky I am to work where I do (remotely), surrounded by dedicated individuals across an enterprise committed to a better Canada.
At a time where many are struggling just to get by, playing a delicate balancing act with the welfare of their loved ones and their own mental health, my own molehills pale in comparison.
And it’s for this reason, coming onto the Thanksgiving long weekend, I’d like to encourage my fellow public servants to celebrate by considering a donation to support our own local communities, through @GCWCC_CCMTGC or otherwise.
