Several interesting points from the Yedioth interview with the departing head of the IDF's Intelligence Directorate, Brig. Gen. Dror Shalom:
* "It still hasn't been proven that [the U.S] exiting the nuclear agreement [JCPOA] served Israel... Iran is far from crumbling."
* The US should have striven to amend the JCPOA instead of dismantling it "the nuclear deal with its flaws, it still had a room to impact other issues," whereas abandoning the deal allowed Iran to progress on research & development for a nuclear device.
*On Israel's current policy in Syria: "We fought to prevent a Hezbollah 2 from emerging in Syria, and we succeeded in that... I observe Iran's difficulty in operating against us from there, so they are going east and south - to Iraq, Yemen and the sea."
* On Soleimani's assassination: "Since the assassination, many of Iran's moves have been halted or slowed down. No one has stepped into his shoes."
* On Iran: "The are somewhat like us. They value life and learning... They have monstrous/stupendous advanced technologies."
* Nasrallah is shaken due to Lebanon's collapsing economy, concerns with organizational corruption, loss of popularity, failure (thus far) to avenge the death of Hezbollah members killed by Israel. Hezbollah doesn't want an all-out war, but a limited escalation is now more likely
* The humanitarian situation in Gaza needs to be improved, but kept worse than in the West Bank so that Palestinians there "don't think Hamas' way is a success."
This is one of the most honest public articulations of Israel's immoral policy in Gaza that I've seen.
* Bolstering the Palestinian Authority is Israel's interest. "The Middle East today is homeless, jobless & hopeless... The [Arab] cooperation with us is on the surface. Below it, hatred is bubbling against us. We need to know how to improve life for our neighbors."
