On Saturday, 3 October, a video of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) officers dragging two men out of a hotel and shooting one of them surfaced on the internet and was immediately followed by outrage.

Four things to know about the ongoing #EndSARS protests. 🧵
1. Founded in 1992 to combat violent crimes in Nigeria, SARS has become an oppressive force notorious for abusing the rights of young Nigerians. #EndSARS
2. Nigerians have been organizing and protesting against SARS-specific brutality as #EndSARS since 2017 (More info: https://www.amnesty.org/download/Documents/AFR4495052020ENGLISH.PDF).
3. Today, we learnt (via @channelstv) that authorities do not consider ending SARS a feasible option. We’re yet to find out what the other options (if any) are (more details: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/10/police-cannot-end-sars-says-dcp-frank-mba/). #EndSARS
4. #EndSARS requires that we think about policing as not only a local issue but also an international issue concerning the serious rising need for police reform and the human costs of unchecked police brutality.
