Cardiff's Active Travel Schools: A Feelgood Friday thread

from @sarahmerry and I:

Children being able to get to school in a safe, cheap, and healthy way. Giving children a positive start to the day and life skills for a better future.

#WalktoSchoolWeek
#BiketoSchoolWeek
It’s also vital from a city transport perspective. Travelling for education accounts for around 30% of all cars on the road in the morning - contributing to congestion and pollution.

Our transport vision is set out here:

Cardiff is a @UNICEF_uk child friendly city, and we place the utmost importance on Future Generations: Our schools and children are front and centre of everything we do.
#ChildFriendlyC1
Whenever we listen to young people, they tell us they want to be able to get to school safely
This is why at Cardiff Council we have committed to supporting EVERY school in Cardiff to have an active travel plan (ATP). And we’re providing loads of help for schools to do this.
You'll want to follow @TravelSchools to see how this is going. https://twitter.com/TravelSchools/status/1305453155149377538?s=20
The gold star ATP is undoubtedly @YsgolHamadryad, a new school In Butetown who’s chair of governors, @DafyddTrystan boldly told parents they ALL had to travel to school without a car. Some people thought this was crazy. Guess what... it worked.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-48253398
School Streets:
This is where a street, adjacent to school gates, is closed to through cars at the beginning and end of the school day. Enforced with road regulation changes and cameras.

14 schools in Cardiff have them now - with loads more super keen https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51140050
This week is also #WalktoSchoolWeek run by the brilliant everyday walking charity @lstreetscymru. They do loads of great work in Cardiff schools. Their WOW programme gets children walking all year round. And…
THEY HAVE A MASCOT (Strider and the amazing Zara at @lakesidePRM )
School Safety Programmes:
Many of our schools take part in Scooter Training, Kerbcraft, Streetwise and the Junior Road Safety Officer Program and we still have a small team of much-loved School Crossing Patrols helping at schools with safety concerns.
We know that many children don’t have access to a bike - so with help from the @WelshGovernment and @WelshCycling we’ve recently delivered 660 bikes to schools - so over 30 schools now have a fleet for children to use.

Info here - https://www.wales247.co.uk/hundreds-of-bikes-delivered-by-cardiffs-schools-bike-fleet-scheme/
Several new schools being built in Cardiff atm.
‘21st Century Schools’ need high levels of Active Travel. An example of this is at @fitzalan where not only will it have great facilities, but it will also link to a Cycleway, linking the schools to communities and the city centre.
. @WelshCycling are in Cardiff Schools getting children excited about cycling as a social and competitive sport, creating pathways to clubs like @MaindyflyersYCC and even onto the world-class performance path, like @elinorbarker and Tour de France winner @geraintthomas86
Thanks also to the teachers and leaders at the schools - they’re really improving outcomes for their pupils, but also their local communities.

@RadnorPrimary in Canton have shown brilliant leadership - enthusiasm is contagious

We visited @HowardianPS earlier this year - and was blown away by the thought and positivity that had gone into their ATP. Check it out here https://www.howardianprimaryschool.co.uk/active-journeys/
Maybe that's why they have such full bike racks
Big up the local and vocal campaigners for cycling and safer routes to schools. The likes of @mummymather @blodtheowl @ruthnia @laurahd @EmmaSandrey @bablinmolik @MiaReesWales @LauraMcAllister and the utterly relentless @beicio who positively campaign and walk the walk.
Some start campaigning whilst their children are young! Here’s my brilliant colleague @jenb_davies who walks and cycles her twins to nursery and everywhere – campaigning and changing things for the better in Llandaff North and beyond https://twitter.com/jenb_davies/status/1298606268123426817?s=21
You want more politicians with kids pics don't you!?
OK... here's more of my colleagues taking their children to school/nursery @huwthomas_Wales @stephencunnah @DeAthCardiff @joseph_carterUK
Under the leadership of the likes of @Amanwy @huw4ogmore the @WelshGovernment are investing heavily in this work, and importantly allowing us to test things. We hope our work can also be used as a blue print for other areas across Wales and support the #ActiveTravelAct
We don’t pretend there aren't a load of negatives in this area as well. Lots of schools don’t have the best access, cars still drive too fast in most areas, and for lots of pupils it simply doesn’t feel safe. We honestly feel this - and are doing everything we can to change it.
I hope you can see, the essence here is a joint vision to see a great future for our children, and teamwork from everyone that is making this happen.

Thanks to everyone - especially the brilliant @cardiffcouncil staff (and loads of people I haven't mentioned)

Onwards...
