For all those engaging in d #EndSarsProtests, remember that u have a right to peaceful protest! But also make sure u document ur participation in d protests by filming with ur phone or camera. This way there’s evidence of any attempt 2 retaliate against u (THREAD) cc @hey_ashiwel
One of the very useful tips for filming is to livestream. We have seen this to prove helpful in spontaneously mobilizing support for a protester who might be facing harassment from the police. Also livestreams ensure that they cannot intimidate you into deleting the evidence /2
When filming a protest, make sure u film continuously. An unbroken recording helps give context to d entire situation (for instance, you get to know what happened before an altercation + how the police responded). A fuller story makes it more difficult for there to be a denial /3
You are filming the protest in order to show that you are exercising ur constitutional right peacefully & to have on record any abuse from law enforcement. To be able to hold an officer accountable, make sure u capture details like their name badge (if it is safe to do so) /4
Shaky footage makes it difficult to sometimes prove d details & extent of an abuse. So we recommend that u hold each shot for at least 10 seconds (or longer) b4 changing perspective. Also don’t just film d abuse, film d perpetrator too (& anyone giving orders, if there is one) /5
Here is an excerpt from the guide we created @witnessorg to share guidance on filming protests especially if u hope to expose injustice & hold perpetrators accountable. Visit http://bit.ly/Library_FilmingProtests for more. Or follow our Africa Program @witness_africa. /6
