The vast size of the market with a lot of 1st-time users meant that just reliability and delivery would suffice, and that's what everyone aspired to achieve.

We treat design as a means to an end, where the functions trumped experience.

Any bold experiment needs a Silicon Valley precedent; otherwise, it's shot down with "This is not how we do it."

Or the management will have its own "view".
