i feel like all the "but queer is a SLUR!" kids are too young to remember the era when men called literally everything they didn't like "gay." people, clothes, food, animals, machines, abstract concepts: all gay. i probably heard it once a day until college
queer was taken up in an academic context wayyyy before people started using gay as a pejorative, which why it's very weird to see people trying to make it a problem again. social media lends itself to these bizarre word games because it collapses in-group and out-group language
my point is not "queer is better than gay." alex gets it: https://twitter.com/AlexPetrovnia/status/1314649141964943360?s=20
