I have tons of respect for MauLer. I think he’s an intelligent reviewer for the wants to improve cinema and film reviewer for the better. However, I have zero respect for Jeremy, but it’s not for the reasons you would think.
Before I criticize Jeremy, I’m going to explain where I agree with him. Jeremy has a lot of valid points, many of which I agree with. The Sequel Trilogy is a mess because Disney/Lucasfilm did not put the thought or passion into planning this trilogy.
The identity politics in Hollywood blockbusters and cancel culture to anyone who has criticism are very problematic. Big budget studios care much more about making money instead of making quality content that comes from a place of passion.
Despite agreeing with him on a lot of things, I don’t have any respect for him. Here are three reasons why.
1. Provides No Solution To The Problem

All of these points I mentioned are valid. Much of Jeremy’s beliefs aren’t wrong. But he so wrapped around what he believes it to the point that he regurgitates them. He would constantly whine and complain about these things, specifically
about Star Wars being dead. However, he doesn’t provide any constructive criticism. He doesn’t come up with any solutions. He just keeps saying the same thing over and over again. He just constantly mentions the problem but doesn’t provide any answers.
2. He Endorses Fan Entitlement

Okay. I got criticized for endorsing fan entitlement when I said that Rian Johnson should listen to MauLer. Yes, I believe Rian Johnson should listen to MauLer, but that’s because MauLer has experience analyzing the strengths and weaknesses
of movies and filmmakers. However, I believe directors can be passionate and make the movies they want to make while listening to constructive criticism and striving to become better writers and filmmakers. However, Jeremy completely disagrees with this belief.
Jeremy believes that movies should be made to be entertainment. He believes that Hollywood should listen to audiences and fans of big IP’s. This is a belief that is endorsed on his channel so much.
I’m sorry but this is a terrible belief that I cannot respect. Films should be made to be art, not to be crowdpleaser. Sure, filmmakers should want their viewers to like their movie but they shouldn’t be their primary goal.
Filmmakers should be passionate and make the they movies they want to make while making their the writing and filmmaking are good. Also, a lot of fans of IP’s and general audiences are not experienced at looking at films objectively. Analyzing and critiquing film is a genuine
skill that takes experience. Why should a filmmaker pander to people who have absolutely not experience analyzing the writing and filmmaking from an objective perspective?
Yes, many people will respond with “Well the studios need their audience to make money.” Again, of course a filmmaker and studio wants a movie to make money. However, a movie shouldn’t solely be made to make money. Again, a film can make money while still coming from a genuine
place of passion. I can get into my issues with big budget studios not giving their filmmakers enough creative control but that’s an entirely different discussion for another day.
3. Jeremy Believes Cinema is Dead

This is one of his beliefs that angers me the most. Jeremy believes cinema is dead because many Hollywood blockbusters are bad. This is a very ignorant thing to say. Matter of fact, as a film fan, I actually find this belief really offensive.
Hollywood blockbusters are not the only form of cinema. There are old classics. There are arthouse films. There are indie movies. There are silent movies. There are foreign language films.
There are many wonderful films that came out last year they aren’t Hollywood blockbusters. Parasite, The Lighthouse, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Marriage Story, Uncut Gems, The Irishman and Little Women are all fantastic films that came out last year.
2019 was one of the greatest years for film. However, Jeremy missed out on (nearly) all of those films because he only cares about Hollywood blockbusters. He doesn’t appreciate film as an art form.
If he believes Hollywood blockbusters are dead (which I 100% agree with by the way), then he should get into independent films. Unlike Hollywood blockbusters, these films are completely free of identity politics and always come from a place of passion.
4. In Conclusion

I don’t hate The Fandom Menace. I agree with much of their beliefs and I have tons of respect for a lot of people in it. However, I have no respect for Jeremy and I genuinely believe he is an idiot.
I think The Fandom Menace deserves a lot better than Jeremy. Matter of fact, I believe Jeremy should be completely removed from The Fandom Menace. It’s very clear to me that he doesn’t care about making a difference and only cares about making money.
