A BIRTHDAY THREAD

Tmrw I turn 50. Why am I telling you? Because it’s a hard age to swallow.

It’s solidly middle-aged & middle-aged women are notoriously invisible.

1/
In fact, a 2017 HBR article said it is nearly impossible for women to get credit for their ideas at work, a fact that frankly bugs me to death.

So to celebrate my half-century, I’m going to tell you my story...

2/
*I got a journalism degree but talked my way into a job as a Webmaster at 27, managing 18 grown-ups during the dot-com boom of the late 90s.

To be clear, I had no idea what I was doing but, so happens, I was damn good at it.

3/
*19 years ago I was part of a small team that built #finserv’s first fully-automated omni-channel experience for a large bank -- years before the term “omni-channel” was a buzzy thing.

4/
*10 years ago I co-authored “The Future of Advice” which agitated for major digital investment in the wealth management space b/c consumer preferences were obvi changing, though most C-suite execs stayed willfully blind to that fact...

5/
... I was on record Robo was over-hyped & that connecting advisors to clients using digital touchpoints is where the future was.

It was a contrarian opinion at the time but I stuck to my guns b/c I knew history would prove me right.

6/
*At 40, with a newborn, I went back to school for an MA in public policy b/c I was fascinated with the machinations of gov’t.

I dropped out before I finished but learned good governmenting is really hard work. (Election, anyone? #Vote )

7/
*3 years ago I started writing about the haptic memory of GenZ b/c of a single fortuitous conversation with a stranger at a #fintech conference.

I started blogging, created the hashtag #GenZDisruption & built a personal brand around it.

8/
So here I am, feeling both older & younger than I am, w/ one thing to say to whoever needs to hear it:

DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SHAKE OFF IMPOSTER SYNDROME.

9/
Stop obsessing over who you're not & embrace who you are because the mold is broken when we're born...

which quite literally means no one does what you can.
