The class is maybe fifty percent African American. For many of these kids, it's the only class they've had in their whole school experience where they are a plurality, if not the majority of the class.

We get to the final projects, and one of the African American girls in the class is working on a project that I can't help a lot with.

So I turned to a young writer, a grad student, who I'd encountered on the internet and asked for help. Now, I'm a 40 year old white guy private school teacher. If that was me getting that email when I was in grad school, I probably woulda said, "sorry, too busy".
