This past week, I had a zoom call with a woman who is a survivor of domestic violence. I've known her for quite some time.

I knew her when she first started to become aware that things were not ok in her marriage. (THREAD)
I knew her when she described to me what it was like to be mocked in front of her own children and to be beaten in her own home.

I knew her when she sought refuge in the shelter systems and found new threats there in the form of drugs, prostitution, and theft.
I knew her when she had to make the tough decision of leaving her children behind because she did not have enough money to support them. http://launchgood.com/DV
I knew her when she realized its not so easy to get a job, especially for an immigrant woman who was married young and had no work experience.

I knew her when she seemed to believe that nothing would work. http://launchgood.com/DV
But I also knew her when she found a little support to help her push through.

I knew her when she reached out to services setup for women like her to help them get back on their feet. http://launchgood.com/DV
I knew her when she took on multiple part-time jobs and sought counseling.

And now I know her as someone who is looking forward to having her kids back in her life full time as she continues to take steps forward in her life. http://launchgood.com/DV
Someone who is looking forward to getting a degree. Someone who will not let her life be controlled in any way by a man who has no idea what it means to be a man. http://launchgood.com/dv
What if she had no one to turn to or no services to reach out towards? There are so many women who are like this who don't have to live in the horrific reality of violence if we do our part to help them. http://launchgood.com/dv
This month, I am working with Muslim Aid USA to raise money to support women who are survivors of domestic violence and assault. We have raised $27,000 already alhamdulillah and are hoping to raise at least $150,000 by the end of the month. http://launchgood.com/dv
