This morning I'm going to tweet about a phenomenon I only discovered recently: women posing with satellites and spacecraft. Feel free to add your own examples! #WSW2020 #Space4Women #womenwithsatellites
Here's a girl with a fabulous space age toy: the Orbitoy Satellite Space Spinner! From the 1970s, I believe. (Image source unknown) #space4women #womenwithsatellite

Australis Oscar 5 was an amateur satellite designed and built in Australia, and launched in 1970. Here is a model with an unknown woman - the AO5 team cannot recall who she is! https://australis-oscar5.weebly.com/  #space4Women #womenwithsatellites
I see vintage images of women posing with satellites all the time, but I only started collecting them recently. #Space4Women #womenwithsatellites
Here is Nancy Grace Roman, the 'Mother of Hubble', with the Orbiting Solar Observatory, launched in 1962. https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/heasarc/missions/oso1.html #Space4Women #WomenwithSatellites
More Australis Oscar 5! Richard Tonkin, Director of the Australian Space Ventures, shows Australia's satellite to Miss University of Melbourne 1965-66, Robyn Jewell (Image NAA) #Space4Women #WomenwithSatellites
I thought it would be interesting to find out more about Robyn Jewell. I think this is her featured in an article in The Australian newspaper. #Space4Women #womenwithsatellites
The trail of woman with satellite, Miss Melbourne University 1965 Robyn Jewell, is a bit cold but I did see references to photos of her with Barry Humphries and Prime Minister John Gorton in the Melbourne Uni archives. #womenwithsatellites

There's so much going on in these images, but I will leave an analysis for later. #Space4Women #womenwithsatellites
A spacecraft - or at least part of one - appeared on the stage at the Miss Universe pageant in Perth in 1979. Yes, it was a piece of Skylab. Note the space cowboy theme. Skylab thus had a close encounter with Donny Osmond, who was also at the pageant. #womenwithsatellites

In the early decades of the space era, space industry had its own specific beauty pageants for the ladies to feel involved. 'Miss Guided Missile' was a common one found in both the US and Australia. (HT @Scottebemeup) #Space4Women #womenwithsatellites
