(1/8) Unpopular opinion: Hybrid learning model is extremely manageable and so beneficial. In a normal year, we are planning for each and every day. In a hybrid model, you are truly planning for a week at a time. The week has multiple days obviously, but the concept is per week.
(2/8) You’re also only seeing students in person once/week; twice/week if approved for select SPED students. Only seeing students once makes every.moment.count—good or bad depending on your outlook. The learning taking place has been just as great if not greater than normal.
(3/8) Smaller class sizes...CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH?! I am at about December (some February) with relationships with my students. The intimate class setting has allowed for such openness and willingness to share. I can’t even imagine where these relationships will be at in June.
(4/8) I teach SPED math: 2 in-person collab, 1 in-person self-contained, 1 virtual collab, and 1 virtual self-contained. Trust me, the struggle is real. Teaching a student with a learning disability in math through a screen? WOW😳. But...also, wow😍 am I learning new strategies.
(5/8) I feel constantly surrounded by negativity. I understand this year is different and takes some brain-aching critical thinking to wrap our minds around the concept. My whiteboard was literally full of scribbles during teacher work week as I tried to make sense of it all.
(6/8) But to paint this narrative that this year is impossible...or worse, that this year teachers should unite to do the bare minimum because teaching is just a “job” is absolutely painful to see and unfair to our students who are working so hard to adapt too. They’re doing it!
(7/8) I notice that many teachers are expecting more grace than they are willing to extend to students. We need to take a step back and realize that yeah, this year is going to be different...but different can be so good! This is the year of all years to take risks.
(8/8) This is the year of all years to experiment with technology, to reinvent the wheel that maybe has been broken for a while, and to finally realize that building relationships is critical. Most importantly, this is the year of differentiation. We can do this. We really can.
