The Nigeria Police cannot exist without a tactical Anti - robbery squad. I was a victim of armed robbers in Akure, my car was shot at and snatched at a fuel station along the expressway. The guy behind me, in a camry was killed. Akure SARS, responded, recovered my car...
Some of the robbers were killed while others were arrested. I went to their office daily to perfect the release bond for my car and I was surprised at the rate at which the officers had to go out each hour to face robbers. Every hour their walkie talkie rang...robberies
At times they had to go in private vehicles because patrol vans weren't enough. I was speechless. I had a chat with the O/C SARS, a graduate of University of Ibadan with a Masters in criminology/Psychology I cannot remember. He was a gentleman in his late 30s..
We have seen cases of bank robberies on twitter, Offa and Kogi especially. How many of us bothered to find out what happened to the families of the slain police officers? For every bad SARS guy we see out there, there is a wounded or dead SARS officer who has laid his life
On the line to keep the streets safe in what seems to be a thankless job as well. Go to any Police hospital or barrack you will find them there. The method of combating robberies in the society must be properly looked into. Improved monitoring and discipline to weed out bad eggs
I don't think the Nigeria Police can do away with over 30,000 men in its Anti robbery squad. If they do, who will replace them? Vigilantes, hunters or bouncers? Can we get decent graduates from our polytechnics or Universities to replace them at once?
So what exactly is our most realistic demand? I don't know how the police will disengage everyone in its anti robbery squad. It is not possible...
