This is a great thread, as usual with Rich, but I would add a very simple qualification. In American politics, policy positions tend to follow partisanship. Then, you start turning against GOP senators, but still support Kavanaugh. As election season begins, you notice that the Federalist society is all behind Trump, so you leave that behind. And then you start noticing the counter-majoriatirianism...
And that makes you see how racism is connected to opposition to welfare state. And how corrupt is the pro-life movement, etc. And before you notice, you are a standard liberal.
Now, if you are Moyne, and you are connected to some vague theoretical movement to separate liberalism from the left, that looks like a threat. For the rest of us sinners, that's more than good enough.
