I'm looking forward to today's climate/energy/environment debate for the BC election. In the lead-up for that I want to debunk a talking point about the government's Clean BC plan: that it gets us 75% of the way to our 2030 target. This is not the case.
The claim is ostensibly backed by climate modelling, yet it makes three major leaps. First, industrial emissions, the lion's share of BC's, are not modelled. They make "post modelling adjustments" which just assume that industry meets targets (eg the methane regs).
Second, they go beyond what is in Clean BC by, for example, assuming that the zero emission mandate for light duty vehicles also applies to heavy duty vehicles. And third, they rely on measures that are not currently funded.
If you do communications on BC's plan please don't repeat that number. Recall that the 2008 Climate Action Plan made the same claim about BC's 2020 target and we are not even close
