For the past year, I& #39;ve been working to facilitate & develop @ncvo& #39;s next strategy (alongside @meggriffithgray). It& #39;s been *quite* a ride!
Last week we shared some of our new directions. Here& #39;s a few more reflections!

Last week we shared some of our new directions. Here& #39;s a few more reflections!
We tried to be intentional about power, participation & to design a decent process. This included starting with our assumptions & principles, approach to engagement, communications & decision-making. We reflected on #newpower & on what kind of org we wanted to be in the future.
We ran a lot of consultation workshops - online & IRL - all across the country. We spoke to hundreds of charities & volunteers on the phone & read their online submissions.
We dug deep into what we knew from our experience & research - especialy things like #TimeWellSpent.

Even before #Covid19, charities were telling us that running their organisations was hard. Now it& #39;s just exhausting. We heard how difficult it was just & #39;keeping the lights on& #39; and the struggle to adapt & grow. We had no idea then what 2020 would throw at us all.
So we& #39;ll keep providing the brilliant *practical support* we& #39;re known for. But we& #39;ll create ways for our members to share & support each other - especially on some of the big, structural challenges facing our society like EDI & climate change. We won& #39;t always be the experts.
People - including those in power - don& #39;t understand the work of charities & volunteers. Yet we know how crucial they are for people, planet & communities, especially those most vulnerable. We& #39;ll work to change this & & #39;bang the drum& #39; for the work charities & volunteers do.
One theme running through these is how we& #39;ll work differently to achieve our goals. A #newpower approach is about networks, sharing & channeling mass participation. We don& #39;t want to be a castle. So we& #39;ll deliver with, through & alongisde others - not by ourselves.
We& #39;re going to become more of a membership org too - one based on trust, relationships & mutual benefit. This will shift how we think as much as how we do things. The success of @ncvo isn& #39;t how many members we have, it& #39;s how are members can use NCVO to be a platform for change.
All of this is underpinned by our new values - collaborative, inclusive, open & ambitious.
Values aren& #39;t aspirations, they must be words that genuinely guide decision-making & behaviours within - and outside of - our org. Any org that fails to live its values won& #39;t last long.

I& #39;m lucky to work on strategy with lots of great charities as a consultant. But running the process within my own org was a different challenge. It was harder to step back, but easier to challenge the existing thinking. I think we got somewhere good - now we have to deliver!
