Ok. I’ll be helpful. If you are a Non Mexican person and want to celebrate Día de Muertos here’s what you need to do.
1. Clear a pleasant space in your home.
2. Pick a person or group of people you want to dedicate your Ofrenda (offering) to. It can be anyone. Fam. Celebs. RBG. https://twitter.com/evo_kositz/status/1314225253632159744
2a. I recommend someone pleasant and not evil or that hurt you a lot while they lived. You don’t want to call back evil people for obvious reasons.
3. Print pictures of the departed. I like to put up pics of them young, when they were most full of life.
4. Get building. You need at least 3 levels. The top level will feature pics of the dead. Second level is for food and water and things they loved in life (it serves to call them back). The bottom level of for candles.
4a. The water and food don’t just call the dead back. They serve as refreshment for them. The journey from the land of the dead is a long one. The candles serve to light their way to you.
5. Put out Chrysanthemums (NOT marigolds)The scent of flowers is known to call spirits back
6. COLOR. You are celebrating these people’s lives. Make it colorful. That’s what the papel picado is for. That’s also why the sugar skulls are so brightly painted. They aren’t just a tasty treat.
Día de muertos isn’t just for Mexican folks. Anyone can celebrate. Just do it respectfully and with the culture in mind. Now go out and do great things.
