As a black woman physician I am subject to both racial AND gender bias as a professional and colleague. Being black I am inferior to a physician of <insert race> AND as a woman I am less than the man physician. Some examples: 1. Women are more often called or introduced by their
first names and men called "Dr." 2. Women hold significantly less senior admin leadership positions 3. Black physicians are frequently regarded as staff or other hospital positions and questioned about being the physician even when wearing a white coat. Being both black & a woman
I experience both biases that I have called the "Double Whammy" effect to my colleagues...And today I got double whammied. My high school featured alumni in the fight against COVID-19 in its quarterly print newsletter to include 3 physicians & a nurse with me being the only POC.
Each profile layout was the same, name + title, class year, photo & article. Then I noticed the glaring faux pas: The 2 white male physicians were listed as "Dr", the white woman nurse had "RN" included but for me only my name was listed WITHOUT the "Dr" title or "MD" credential.
Then again in the article text both white men physicians called "Dr so and so" and I only as "Priscilla". I stared for a long time, flipped back and forth but the words did not change and the evidence was there in black & white. What some might call a simple oversight or mistake
I call an implicit bias with racial and gender discrimination. I was contacted b/c I'm a physician, interviewed on being a physician and sent a bio and CV that screams PHYSICIAN. Why then was not my title or credentials listed? This is common occurrence for a women physician or
black physician so consider the amplification for a black-woman physician. We must recognize this & state it directly in order to address this. Interested to hear stories of women/black women physicians on their experiences with gender & racial biases and how they dealt with it.
The article pictures of what is there and what is not there, speak for themselves. And yes indeed I emailed the writer & newsletter editor to discuss this @cclareMDMPH @DrLaurenP @gradydoctor @choo_ek @uche_blackstock #BlackInTheIvory #WomenInTheIvory #MedTwitter #ImSpeakingNow
