Ok, listen up, everyone, Esther Duflo just said "Referees need to be more positive. This is just a paper in the AER , it's not some divine piece coming down! I am limited by the number of positive reports I get not by space available in the journal"
Say what you like about the paper. The weight of the paper is not on your shoulders. Don't feel embarassed or worried the editor will go against you. "The younger people are the most negative. Mellow a bit" This is GOLD
There is no page limit, but dont let it be too long. Also, read the instructions to authors on the website
You can select which co-editor you would like to handle your paper and 90% of the time, she will follow it. You can't have your advisor if you're untenured. BUT you can review your advisor's paper, haha
We accept short papers. If you have a paper that's shortish but too long for AER Insights, try sending to AER... We don't have stars anymore in the AER - the stars are gone, don't be mad.
Reject and Resubmit-- treat it like a Revise and Resubmit. Drop everything and take care of itEditors give that option if they think there is something they are asking for that they are not sure will work out.
If you have a Revise and Resubmit or conditional acceptance, **drop everything** and take care of it. Most R&Rs are accepted. The chances are much higher than trying to convert a fresh paper.
Thank you to Anusha Chari for organizing and @jenniferdoleac and @erinhengel for moderating and @judy_chevalier and @AEACSWEP leadership, and of course Esther Duflo for a great session.
