To anyone considering voting for Holcomb: A thread
Many people like Holcomb because he seems moderate in contrast to Trumps Republican Party, and “he hasn’t done a bad job”, which may be true, things haven’t really changed for the Hoosier state over 4 years too much.
But here is a reminder of where Indiana sits nationally. According to a 2019 AHR Report; Indiana is the 2nd most polluted state in the country. According to the American Lung Association, the Indianapolis Metro Area has the 13th worst air quality in America.
Indiana is also the 2nd most clinically depressed state per capita according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. And the WSJ ranked Indiana the 4th most miserable state in the Union.
This is the status quo of Indiana that has neither gotten better or worse over 4 years. A vote for Holcomb is a vote for complacency. However:
Holcomb is quite progressive when it comes to civil rights, he has a zero discrimination initiative that encompasses every marginalized group including LGBTQ+. He has increased penalties for Hate Crimes and has provided protections for sexual orientation and gender identity.
He is a strong institutionalist, who supports tougher sentencing but also more comprehensive felon training programs. He has also raised teacher pay by $115 million, and promised to plant one million trees over the next 5 years.
Here’s the catch however, everything I just brought, was only mentioned in the last 12 months. The action on environmentalism has yet to be seen and could be construed as an arbitrary and capricious method to pull votes from the left.
Woody Meyers supports expanding Medicare/Medicaid, incentivizing education through boosting teacher pay, transitioning from fossil fuel to renewable over 4 years, and diversifying the Hoosier economy to attract higher quality and better paying jobs by moving away from industry.
The decision you must make is whether or not you are okay with the state staying the way it has been, or if you want to take a chance on change.
