Very solemn news for Iranians worldwide: Iranian maestro Shajarian has died at the age of 80. He had cancer.

His son wrote that the soil under the feet of the Iranian people has flown to the land of the Beloved (خاک پای مردم ایران به دیار معشوق پرواز کرد)
NPR Music named him one of the 50 Greatest Voices. See why here:
"Some do art for their own sake. I do art for the sake of humanity. For the sake of the people in whose midst I live. When I see humanity face pains and sufferings, I face them too. I too have borne these sufferings." https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tehranbureau/2012/04/qa-mohammad-reza-shajarian.html
Hard to overstate how beloved he was. Spending some time with his music today:
Benefit concert after the devastating 2003 Bam earthquake. Audience brought to tears.
Dang. My people make beautiful art.
I remember growing up not understanding this. His music blasted on long car rides to family mehmoonis, me complaining "what is this all this noise!" Now, it makes *me* cry.

(Parents, force your children to listen to music that moves your soul. It'll move theirs eventually, too.)
