Last night was a metaphor for what every woman of color experiences. No matter what accolades, credentials, experience a woman of color achieves, this society (in particular white men & women) will continue to silence her, speak over her, & disrespect her.
It was a metaphor bc it was supposed to be a debate, but it was rather a reminder that as women of color we will continue to be mistreated & disrespected. That any action we take that is not under the “rules” they establish will be punished while white folks can get away with it.
It made me remember of all the mistreatment & disrespect I’ve received as an Indigenous woman no matter having a PhD, achievements, and experience behind my “name.” We are taught to follow respectability politics, yet we face the same repercussions for just being WOC.
Harris is a Black woman who experienced systematic racism on stage, while her opponent who was exerting his white privilege & power denied the existence of systematic racism. The irony right...but she deserved respect from both the moderator and the VP.
The white woman moderator would cut her off abruptly while she wouldn’t do that for the white man...sometimes even granting him more time while not doing the same with Harris. The moderators all have implicit bias and it’s sad to witness and sad to see how normalized it is.
