The Somali diaspora have grown up in countries that practice capitalism and exploitation. Whether it is a conscious or unconscious agenda, a lot of you who say you want to go back home and help ‘rebuild’ it, come with ideas of borderline exploitation, profiting off the poor. 1/2
You come with expectations of securing high roles without the proper experience or education, you use your privilege to get you there. Ideas of building lavish houses by using underpaid labor, you come with classist views which almost replicates what we call here the 1%.
Buying up land to build realestate in a country you barely contributed to. Raising the housing market so that the average Somali family cannot afford it. Underpaying maids and labourers, we need to do better and change our conditionings before this becomes a long term issue
I’m sure we can all agree that we want a safer and more equal Somalia. More jobs & more homes affordable & accessible to the average citizen. More hospitals and mental health professionals which is especially so critical to the recovery of a country rebuilding from war.
