[1/9] Yesterday, @educationgovuk announced that the @The_TUC Union Learn Fund (ULF) would be scrapped by March 2021. [2/9] The ULF supports around 250,000 learners to retrain and upskill at a cost of £11m per year. Independent evaluation in 2018/19 showed that every £1 invested in the fund, resulted in an economic return of £12.30 https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👇" title="Rückhand Zeigefinger nach unten" aria-label="Emoji: Rückhand Zeigefinger nach unten">

[3/9] This same independent evaluation showed that over two-thirds (68%) of learners with no previous qualification and just under half (47%) of those starting with Entry level or Level 1 qualifications got a qualification at a higher level as a result of ULF support.
[4/9] There is lots of evidence to show that engagement is a real problem when it comes to adult learning. Local, face-to-face provision with a familiar source, as provided by the ULF, is vital to encourage lifelong learning.
[5/9] The ULF provides value for the taxpayer and is an example of exactly what unions should be doing.

The question now is what guarantee will this Government give to the 250,000 ULF learners to ensure they can carrying on learning and retraining?
[6/9] It& #39;s worth that mentioning unions do contribute from their own membership funds to the ULF but that it& #39;s a three way bargain. They also lever in a big contribution through agreements from employers. The third part of the triangle is the contribution from the Government.
[7/9] Last week, the General Secretary of @The_TUC @FrancesOGrady stood by the Chancellor @RishiSunak outside No 11 and gave backing to the new Job Support Scheme.
[8/9] It seems a strange way to react to this by scrapping a successful scheme. In doing so, this looks like unnecessary union bashing, rather than supporting a skills programme that delivers good outcomes and value for money.
[9/9] I hope @educationgovuk @hmtreasury reconsiders this decision.

My Point of Order in @HouseofCommons today on the proposed scrapping of the £11m @The_TUC Union Learn Fund, which supports 250,000 learners https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👇" title="Rückhand Zeigefinger nach unten" aria-label="Emoji: Rückhand Zeigefinger nach unten">
