The GOP's hatred of Democracy, That used to be the quiet part.

They're setting the debate stage now to embrace autocracy. https://twitter.com/SenMikeLee/status/1314089207875371008
You're watching a real-time shift in the Overton Window (the acceptable bounds of discussion)

Now the acceptable far right edge of political discussion is "Who needs Democracy anyway?"

The concept of abandoning even the attempt of a country by and for the people is on the table
Yes we have always chastised Trump for being a wanna-be dictator.

However now we are watching the GOP explicitly and openly pave the way for autocracy as a legitimate political option.

They aren't afraid of the President.

They WANT this. And have for a while.
Every day we continue to treat the GOP as a group who simply prefers a different path toward a shared goal is another social or civil rights gain put on the chopping block.

They are not headed to the same destination.

Up until now they've lied about where the car is headed
Why would a bunch of people who fundamentally hate democracy wrap themselves in patriotism then?

Because you're not allowed to question anything done under the guise of advancing the US.

Even if what is done is in direct opposition to the stated goals
Patriotism is a click-whirr stimulant in America.

It's imagery and symbolism is the trigger to activate the lifelong psychological conditioning of Americans to reflexively revere and respect anything patriotic.

Wave a flag while saying something and Americans will hear you out
The converse of this conditioning is that if you want Americans to automatically reject an idea, you merely associate that idea with a different flag.

This is how people who hate democracy can nevertheless gain the loyalty of people who don't.
This is why Americans have always been conditioned to pledge allegiance to a flag--a cloth symbol FIRST and only to each other afterward.

The flag.

The symbol.

The imagery is the thing that citizens are supposed to prioritize over the citizenry.

And this is why.
The rights and "freedoms" that the conservatives seek to conserve can always be reduced to "the right to inflict harm, both individually and systemically"

And these goals have always been in conflict with Democracy.
