Hi shorebird folks! 1more4U2go! Migratory shorebirds connect. Movements, presence & phenotypes signal the state of habitats. Let's develop tracked individual migratory birds as sentinels (of connected parts) of Earth. #ornithology #globalchange @WaderStudy

Recently, 100 units of fossil energy produced 104 energy units of food, thanks soil-based processes. Now, 100 units fossil energy yield 16 food units, the 84% loss equals release of CO2 & active nitrogen threatening climate & biodiversity. #globalchange #dairy
3/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
Looking at scale of a country then, steep decline of specialized #dairy #farmland #wader, black-tailed #godwit ( #grutto) in Netherlands signals growth of unsustainable, climate & biodiversity threatening, practices in agriculture. #globalchange @WaderStudy
4/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
Idea of #shorebirds as #integrative #sentinels of #globalchange is not new. It was topic of review published @IBIS_journal 2005. Numbers, timing of migration, plumage, mass & behaviour indicate if ecological & climate systems are intact. @WaderStudy @unep_aewa
5/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
Neither is idea of reversed ( #optimality) reasoning. In important prey species of #knots, #Baltic #tellins, deeper burrowing depth in autumn predicted greater recruitment (spatfall) during following summer! #marinebiology #bivalves #WaddenSea @NIOZnieuws
6/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
In fact, deeper burrowing predicted re-establishment of #Baltic #tellins as dominant #bivalve on intertidal flats of western Dutch #WaddenSea, 8 years after destructive #cockle #dredging stopped. #fishery #marinebiology #bivalves @NIOZnieuws @waddentweets
7/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
The return of #Baltic #tellin (Limecola balthica) also lead to return of late-summer-to-early-winter red #knots, during their prebasic #moult, as red knots closely track tellins. #numericalresponse #bivalves @NIOZnieuws @waddentweets @AllertBijleveld
8/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
But numbers are not always the most informative! Great #knots at YaluJiang, #YellowSea, China, that apparently had nowhere to go, tried coping by adjusting digestive tract size to diminishing prey quality. #numericalresponse #phenotype @EAAFP @WaderStudy
9/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
Whereas numbers of islandica #knots demonstrated dredging effects & appropriate #policy responses, canutus knots showed reduced growth of young in summers with early snow melt, demonstrating consequences of #arctic #warming. #globalwarming @aaas @NIOZnieuws
10/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
The most inaccessible lands in #Arctic change fastest due to #globalwarming. This affects the long-distance migratory #shorebirds breeding there, but also make them potential #sentinels of this change. #globalchange #tundra #phenology #snow @univgroningen
11/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
Bar-tailed #godwits migrating along #EastAtlanticFlyway keptup with advancing snow melt by staging shorter in #WaddenSea at cost of lower #survival. Dependence on chains of sites complicates simple #sentinel interpretations. #globalchange #arcticamplification
12/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
This calls for direct measurements of movements to show state of animal & environment. Movement analysis of shorebirds with trackers, especially if tracks are detailed, offer lots of promise. #movementecology #globalchange #ornithology #ICARUSinitiative
13/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
A very simple application may be movements during breeding season. As example, identified non-breeding sat-tagged black-tailed #godwits move much more and further than birds with a mate & nest. #satellitetracking #movementecology #grutto @univgroningen
14/21 #ISTC20 #Sesh9
There is much scope in combining Earth observations with Down-to-Earth observations of tracked #shorebirds. We developed a very satisfactory LAND USE INTENSITY metric based on @Sentinel1a explaining godwit distributions. https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1365-2664.13077 @ESA_EO @esa
