We're glad you asked! Often when data is gathered it foes not take into account who is male and who is female, known as sex disaggregating the data.
As a result, the threatening behaviour experience by womxn is invisible and dismissed because policymakers can say: "There's no data to back this up"
Why does this matter?
Well...According to statistics men are more likely to be victims of crime on the London Underground. This means that it seems more resourceful to direct funding towards male safety than female safety.
When an American researcher wanted to know how transit agencies were addressing womxn's safety she was met with, "Statistical data for our system does not show females have a greater risk."
Yet we know that sexual harassment is overwhelmingly under-reported...
Over 1/3 of Londoners have been subjected to unwanted sexual behaviour while travelling on public transport. 61% of womxn have admitted that concerns of harassment have impacted how they use public transport.
This is where Visible comes in. We exist to provide an easy way for you and everyone else to report harassment on the Tube. We capture your gender and other demographic information so we can find out who these incidents are happening to - putting the power in your hands.
