1. I've tried to write this post for the last three days, but each time I get angry and need to walk away.
I'd like to start by saying that I do not envy anyone in power who has had to make difficult decisions during this world crisis.
2. It must be immensely difficult wearing that burden, and yet some leaders have managed so much more efficiently than others.
However, the view towards the arts in both Australia and the UK has made me feel sick.
3. In Australia the arts have basically been ignored, not put into budgets, not supported and had every door shut in their faces without any answers.
Recently, here in the UK, statements were made that we were not viable.
4. Our leaders stated that we should consider choosing another profession, move on, and my favourite one- consider getting an education.....
I don't need to tell each of you how important The Arts are. You follow me because you enjoy music, or find me wildly amusing.
5. I would like to remind you of the following: Most artists spend their entire lives being asked 'What do you do for a real job?'
I'm here to tell you : DING DING DING that is my job, and my sector not only brings you a wealth of income but also an immense amount of joy.
6.I've trained.Goodness me I've been educated. I've paid high taxes and sizeable visa fees to have that privilege.I've learnt languages, studied literature,Greek mythology, drama, business and been an educator, etc. Most of us will have a 2nd job for at least half of our careers.
7. We are fighters, we understand that to earn a living doing this is not easy. We are brave. We don't have a cushy 9-5 job that provides benefits and security. We give all that up to chase our dreams, but we are certainly not dreamers. We are communicators.
8.Every day of our lives we are constantly trying to be better, improve ourselves and the quality that we bring before our audiences.
They money that we earn goes back into the economy double fold because we are consistently educating ourselves.
9. So rather than look down your noses at us, remember that you need us. Artists provide hope, inspiration and a chance to escape, and right now, we need more of that hope in this world than ever.
10. And to my fellow artists, especially the younger generation. Don't let the 'powers' make you feel undervalued. Do what you need during this time to survive (of course), but never stop bringing your skill and determination to this world.
11. You are brave, passionate, vulnerable in the best way and wonderful.
The world needs each of you.
I value you.
