Indonesia’s democracy is under threat. The controversial Omnibus Law on job creation was passed earlier this week. People are now protesting in several parts of Indonesia. This is a problem of trust towards the government and people do not want to be fooled once more!
The discussion and ratification process by the House of Representatives was carried out so quickly; it seemed rushed. It was done in hotels and on weekends, quietly, away from the eyes and ears of the public.
Many of the articles represent the interests of oligarchs and power-hungry officials, instead of the people.
Those we elected to represent us turned out to be the same people who took away our rights. This is how our democracy deteriorates: all for those capitalists to further exploit the workers and make more money.
People start to use the tagline “ #MosiTidakPercaya” or “ #MotionOfConfidence” towards the government. This is due to the House of Representatives’ decision to pass the Omnibus Law on job creation in a rush.
From there on, people are enraged towards the government. Since October 5, people have gathered to demonstrate in several locations. Workers boycott to work in industrial areas. Students and activists also join the movement to protest.
The passing of this bill is the very proof that our government failed to take strong opposition coming from various society groups.
Aside from workers, Indonesian college students, environmental activists, indigenous tribes, marginalized groups, and feminist groups; yet the government once again managed to brush off our collective demand.
The struggle is still continuing. The future of Indonesia is indecisive. It is up to the people to raise their voices. We are the people! #MosiTidakPercaya #TolakOmnibusLaw #TolakUUCiptaKerja #SahkanRUUPKS
