He had insane ability to execute skills in clutch situations too - here he makes three Port players fall over with a flick of the hips and then kicks a goal to point Geelong a point up in the last three minutes.
This gets a second angle because it’s the best thing to ever happen in footy. We lost this day then deleted Port by 20 goals in a grand final about six weeks later.
He was incredible on both feet too - this was about five minutes in to his 150th game. Snap on the left from a set shot on the boundary thank you very much. We knew it was The Gaz Show that night from then - 46 touches and three goals. Too bad Crows.
This is one of his 7 marks from that night (2 contested), and one of his 2 goal assists. Also picked up three of his 30 Brownlow votes for the season that night to bring home his first Charlie.
Sometimes he was just straight up God Mode. This day against Sydney in 2008 he kicked three last quarter goals in one of the best individual displays I’ve ever seen. Unbelievably damaging at stoppages.
His vision and talent by foot was unparalleled. Every single possession was of the highest quality.
You couldn’t give him a millimetre, because he’d take a kilometre. This image of him fist pumping to the crowd is burnt in my brain.
This also gets a second angle. “Ablett, the little genius, drives it home!"
We can have a little Gold Coast highlight, as a treat. Cats fans made half-hearted attempts to hate him when he went north but he was always Our Gaz. This standing ovation at Kardinia Park in 2013 - his second Brownlow year - is one of my most cherished footy memories.
That, of course, was almost a shot-for-shot rendition of one of the best goals I’ve ever seen. It came late in a home smashing of Brisbane, but the balance, vision, poise, skill, speed of thought and execution here is simply as good as it’s possible to be.
An artist and an auteur at the top of his field, scaling heights it didn’t seem possible for humans to climb. Whatever happens on Saturday, thanks Gaz.
