Myth # 7 for #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth 2020:
ALL PEDIATRICIANS SCREEN FOR EARLY INDICATORS OF AUTISM, ADHD, AND DYSLEXIA/READING IMPAIRMENTS.
Unfortunately not. While pediatricians often screen for autism and ADHD, they don& #39;t screen for learning disabilities. Why?
They argue that language-based learning disabilities such as #dyslexia require an "educational" intervention while autism & ADHD require medical intervention. This ignores the strong research showing that #dyslexia & #reading disabilities have strong #mental health implications.
We argue that pediatricians need to screen for #dyslexia & #reading impairments. WHY? Read our arguments and suggestions for #screening in our recent paper: & #39;Reintroducing #dyslexia: Early Identification and Implications for Pediatric Practice& #39; https://bit.ly/3iG0lUX ">https://bit.ly/3iG0lUX&q...
Our push for screening for at-risk children in pediatric practices has also been supported by an opinion piece in the @nytimes by Perri Klass, M.D: "Is Your Child Struggling in School? Talk to Your Pediatrician https://nyti.ms/35eDTwH ">https://nyti.ms/35eDTwH&q...
