A2: #TLCtransform asks what is black #breast cancer... Dissertation below. 1/
#BreastCancer is a spectrum of diseases that can impact anyone at any time. Unfortunately, black women (and men!) often have more aggressive disease and worse outcomes. Why?? #TLCtransform #BlackBreastCancerMatters 2/
Check out this egregious statistic: Black women 40% more likely to die from #BreastCancer! #TLCtransform 3/
Shown another way... Worse outcomes of all #racial or #ethnic groups. #TLCtransform 4/
So many reasons for worse outcomes among Blacks, including genetic (BRCA mutations) & biologic (triple negative, more comorbid conditions) but social determinants of health ( #SDOH) like income, education, occupation impact access to care & information. #TLCtransform 5/
Black women present at later stages of disease despite improvements in #breastcancer screening rates, but confusing guidelines that suggest delaying mammograms do NOT apply to black women! #TLCtransform 6/
Higher rates of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) for AA (African-Americans) and African women of African when compared with European American (EA) Cancers 2018.
Lack of inclusion in #clinicaltrials makes investigating these differences difficult. #TLCtransform 7/
Higher rates of #TNBC in black women has implications for screening since it has a greater impact among young women #TLCtransform 8/
And we know #TNBC has poorer outcomes. So it’s vital to address this aspect of #blackbreastcancer in a sustained and meaningful way. #TLCtransform 9/
Since #COVID19, there is finally more global recognition of the impact that #SDOH have on disease states, whether that be incidence (# of new cases) or how diseases are developed, assessed & treated. #blackbreastcancer is no different. #TLCtransform 10/
One size does NOT fit all. Equality is NOT the same thing as EQUITY. The impact of #systemicracism on the development of #breastcancer & how it is managed in Blacks can no longer be minimized. #winkfieldout #BlackBreastCancerMatters #TLCtransform 11/11
