I watched Kartini few days ago. I don't usually watch Indonesian films because 10-20 years ago, their films were quite cringe-y and suck. But in recent years, Indo films overtook Msian films in many ways in term of quality.

These are my favourite scenes. A thread;
This scene reminds me of that nasi kangkang thingy. 😂
This scene depicting Kartini's sister being married off by washing her husband's feet according to Javanese wedding tradition, while Kartini narrating her famous lines;

"Tubuh boleh terpasung, tapi jiwa dan pikiran harus terbang sebebas bebasnya."

This is a powerful scene. 😉
Another powerful narration by Kartini regarding women's status in Javanese society;

"Sekali jiwa diserahkan, selamanya tidak akan pernah kita miliki kembali."

"Ni tidak akan serahkan jiwa ini kepada siapa pun, dia harus menjadi saksi kepedihan dan kebahagiaan Ni di masa depan."
That's right, girl. I totally agreed with you there 🖖
That's right. Only education. 💪
The status of women in old Javanese society. Sad.
Sigh 😪
Of religion. I guess, this has not been changed much since 19th century. 🤷
Of Iqra'.
Indeed. ☝️
Well, this is what feudal society most afraid of. Feudal and patriarchy society precisely.
The poor stays poor, the illiterate stays illiterate. That's why these people with power want you to stay dumb.
Well, that was how revolution in Indonesia took place, by killing off the royalties. 🤷
How you negotiate your marriage terms 101;
Her second term;
Her third term, this is genius✌️
And her final term is about her biological mother. Anyway, her biological mother is the first wife of her father but she is not a royal blood and a maid, that's why her father had to take 2nd wife, a royal blood (Raden).

(Actually her father loves her mother so much 😉)
I love this scene. I cried so much. 😭
😭😭😭

End.
The reason I love this movie:

The screenwriting is superb. Smooth.

Indonesian films usually have "chaos" screenwriting, unsur penceritaan yang tidak kemas dan susah nak faham.

This one athough the pace is slow, you immediately immersed in it. Ala2 tengok filem Bong Joon-ho.
Honestly, I hate Indonesian films because of how they write the screenwriting and story plot. Chaos, tidak kemas, cincai sana sini, jalan cerita terlompat sana sini.

But "Kartini" changed my perspectives. They do know how to write proper story. The flow is smooth like that.
