Turning Point USA just ran ad on CNN during #VPDebate
coverage about #SCOTUS. My bet: CNN ran it because it doesn’t have easy lies to disprove but misses a whole lot of context. Let me use my @Hulu rewind to walk you thru a #FactCheck of the ad: 1/x

First it says Reagan “appointed” Robert Bork. No, Bork was nominated but never got to sit on high court. This nomination is chosen by TPUSA because indeed it “changed everything” and gave us Bork-ed. 2/x https://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2012/12/19/167645600/robert-borks-supreme-court-nomination-changed-everything-maybe-forever
TPUSA has pic of Ted Kennedy adding the unnamed “smears” worked. Why no name? None existed akin to what TP’s other examples. Senate’s “resounding rejection of” Bork was “first time it spurned” SCOTUS nominee “for primarily ideological reasons.” 3/x https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/07/us/politics/joe-biden-bork-supreme-court.html
This is why next lead-in about Clarence Thomas is wrong: “in 1991 it was tried again.” Then we have the famous “high tech lynching” line from Thomas. BTW Biden led both of these hearings. 4/x
There is no need to rehash the Thomas heading as Turning Point USA spends just one line on it. Then onto Kavanaugh hearings where TP ties it all to famed and now felon (TP got that right) lawyer Michael Avenatti. What is connection between him and the judge? 5/x
Turning Point USA erases the major accuser of Kavanaugh - Christie Ford. She and a second accuser had nothing to do with Avenatti. He released sworn statement from third woman. The unvetted claims “put Dems in tough spot” on believing all women 6/x https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/10/05/did-michael-avenatti-help-doom-case-against-brett-kavanaugh/
This gave GOP an opening that TPUSA re-uses: “an opportunity to shift the narrative away from Ford's allegations and make a broader case that the growing accusations of sexual misconduct amounted to an orchestrated Democratic smear campaign.” 7/x https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/06/politics/democrats-avenatti-swetnick-accusation/index.html
These 3 cases are the same. Then Turning Point USA compares them to 3 nominees by Dem prez who sailed thru. Breyer was confirmed 87-9. Famously among his supporters was Republican Strom Thurmond. 8/x

Kagan passed 63-37. Among her supporters was Lindsey Graham. 9/x http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2010/06/02/some_in_gop_backing_kagan/
Sotomayor passed 68-31. Nine Republicans voted for her. So less “sailing” and more criticism from GOP who didn’t have much in terms of control of numbers in the Senate. 10/x https://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/07/us/politics/07confirm.html?referringSource=articleShare
In the end Turning Point USA claims this is an ad full of “history.” While limited by 30 seconds, it would be graded poorly in history 101 because of its lumping together first 3 and inaccurately labeling last 3. More fact checks of Turning Point USA https://link.medium.com/oMiswRu3oab
