Wales isn’t currently a colony. Calling Wales a colony right now when it is a beneficiary of colonisation of the 3rd world panders to historical revisionism of Welsh history for the white gaze in an age of “Wales deserves reparations”. These comments r loaded, incorrect+divisive
So many conversations on this topic seek to erase or ignore Welsh people of colour, working class people and people from multigenerational communities because our lived experiences contradict easy and lazy histories and comparisons predicated on state violence and exploitation
Modern Wales wouldn’t exist without the scramble for Africa or the partition of India. There were welsh slave owners. Welsh settled colonisers in America. Repainting welsh populations in a dichotomy of colonised +coloniser in the contemporary era fits nicely for political agendas
Enslaved people’s labour paid for Penrhyn Quarry. Slaves were kept on Windsor Place. Jones was a Welsh linguist who was an orientalist. Henry Morton Stanley was King Leopold’s right hand man, Picton was governor, Captain Morgan was a governor- when will we start to be honest?
A lack of welsh people of colour and poc in Wales+people from multigenerational communities in these convos isn’t by accident. It’s a pipeline progression that makes it easier 2 play equality off against each other, pick+choose whom u believe, based on how they fit world view
