Labeling his hairstyle ‘ridiculous’ is not racist but rather a bit out of the ordinary for a grown (assumed)heterosexual man to judge another grown man’s hairstyle.

Nonetheless had that been the only intent of your comment then it wouldn’t have been considered racist but rather just weird and insecure hate of another man. HOWEVER... (continued below)..

Racism is introduced when the aforementioned (assumed)heterosexual white man (YOU) not only expresses disapproval of the black man’s current cut but then requests the black man to alter the haircut to a vanilla. “safe” & clean cut which the white man (YOU) would approve of.

You are thereby effectively requesting the black man to conform to your Caucasian standards of “acceptable” & “safe” hairstyles white folks are comfortable with even though you lack the understanding of the black man’s culture and hair type.

For example: Even if your son had a mushroom bowl haircut resembling the American neo nazi terrorists of recent years, I’m sure you still cannot fathom telling your son that his haircut which suits his hair isn’t acceptable & ...(continued below)....
