A rant in the form of a thread: Students have been socialized to request disability accommodations in ways that damage their basic self-respect. Today, I told a student that I wouldn’t grant his accommodation request because it was something that I should have done for everyone.

So, instead, I was going to build it into the structure of the class moving forward, according to the principles of universal design. He thanked me profusely for my “kindness” and so I then explained that this wasn’t a matter of kindness, but justice and fairness.
