THREAD: Mesut Ozil the Silent Magician.
Where It All Began!!!!!!!
Mesut Özil was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on the 15th October 1988, Mesut is of Turkish descent hench the meaning of Mesut in Turkish that being of “Happy”. Özil honed he’s soccer skills on the infamous “Monkey Cage”.
As time passed and Mesut started playing for smaller youth programs, he soon caught the attention of Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in 2005. Where in which he progressively started growing within the academy and regarded as a hidden gem.
In 1½ seasons Ozil registered 38 apps scoring 3 goals and 5 assists. Looking from an outside perspective you wouldn’t have thought he was special. Although he’s numbers didn’t do any justice to he’s playmaking skills, Schalke stood by him regarding him as “The Next Big Thing”
In 2008, Ozil was allowed to leave Schalke to join German outfit Werder Bremen. There he started to flourish and show he’s true capabilities. In he’s first season Ozil appeared 47 times scoring 3 times and assisting a decent 23 times, adding to the fact he had more playing time.
Ultimately Werder Bremen finished the season 10th and lost in the UEFA Final losing out to Shakhter Donetsk. But ended the season with a high as they beat Bayer Leverkusen in the final of the DFB Pokal in Berlin. Where in which Ozil scored the winning goal ending 1-0.
The next season 09/10 Ozil really shone as he improved dramatically notching up an impressive 10 goals and 29 assists. Which amounted to 39 g/a contributions in 47 games. The 21 year old became the main source of creativity as they ended 3rd that season, earning him a spot in WC.
The 2010 Germany team was stacked with amazing talent as evident in the pictures. Many forget how tough Germany squad was. Ozil was given the huge responsibility at a young age starting all their games. Notching up an impressive 1 goal and 4 assists given the quality & short span
That World Cup made clubs stand up and set their sights on this promising talent, as the likes of Man United, Arsenal and Barcelona were among a plethora of big teams who wanted trying to capture he’s signature. Ultimately, he ended up signing for Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.
Mesut Ozil was bought in by Jose Mourinho to play back up to Kaka who 3 seasons prior was regarded as the best player in the world, but sadly injuries hampered him thus giving the young German a chance of a lifetime. Which he seized and started becoming the main state of the team
In he’s first campaign he registered 5g and 29 assists which gave him 0.55 assists a game in 53 appearances. This figure could have risen if it wasn't for the fact that he ended up coming from the bench. Shockingly he had still finished with the most assists in all of Europe
Following the next season Mesut had played an integral in Madrids triumph of La Liga, being the first team to surpass the 100pt barrier. Ozil got 7g and 28a in 53 appearances. Finishing top assistor in La Liga as well as Ballon D’or shortlist and nominated in the UEFA Best Award.
Euros got underway and Germany had once again fell short losing in the semi finals to Italy,Ozil was regarded Germany best international, as well as be named in the Team of The Tournament in 2012 due to him ultimately being the creative enforcer finishing as the highest assistor.
In Ozil last season with madrid, for the 3rd consecutive time for he had most assists in La Liga ending the season with 10g and 29a in 52app. Ozil formed a deadly partnership with Ronaldo. Ozil assisting 81 times and Ronaldo bagging 168 goals.
Sadly, that didn’t last long as he slowly started to realise when the club acquired Modric feeling as though he was going to be replaced. Madrid then purchased Bale for a then record fee, this resulted in them selling one of their assets that being of Ozil to balance the books.
On the 2nd of September 2013 on Deadline Day it was announced that Arsenal would be getting the world class German International for 42.5million. This was real statement of intent given the fact for nearly a decade the club could not spend due to financial restraints.
There was a whole new buzz around the Emirates for Ozil debut. He’s debut came in a 3-1 win against Sunderland away where it took 11min to announce himself to the Arsenal faithful, could this be the guy to take them to the new level?
Overall in 2014, Ozil registered 14 goals and 7 assists in 42app. Although that was a big dip from he’s standards, you could be forgiven as had to adapt to the league. Also, it was evident that some of the players weren’t up to he’s standards. As Giroud racked up 22g in 51apps.
Most people forget that season Arsenal had spent the most time at the top of league, and come January it was evident that they needed a CM and ST. They were linked with Luis Suarez as well as Higuain.Sadly, things never materialised and it cost them in the league finishing 4th
On the plus side in Ozil first season he did deliver a trophy that the fans have been anticipating for 9years. The FA CUP beating out Hull City in a 3-2 Victory. Was that the turning point for Arsenal?
As the World Cup in Brasil came up, Ozil was once again called up to the National team. There he played a key role featuring all of there game enroute to the final. Where they ultimately won, and Germany were crowned World Champions.
Fast Forward to season where in which Arsenal were close to winning the leagye ultimately finishing 2nd.10pts behind Leicester City. Ozil by he’s standards had reached he’s peak at Arsenal registering 20assists in all comps 19 being of that in the league.
From then onwards to present day, it is evident that Ozil has become the shadow of the player he once was. As people are more accustomed to, he’s off the field antics instead of on it. Ozil has been named a lot of things noticeably “Luxury player”. But that is far from the Truth!
If you look at the success that Mesut Ozil endured in he’s career it is notable the fact that he has always had a secure solid base behind him. Something prior to the Thomas Partey acquisition that Arsenal have been lacking since Vieira left back in 2005.
At Madrid he was always playing the free roaming “Number 10” role, due to the intelligence of Alonso and Khedira in that pivot position, similar to he’s time Germany where he has strived and won the WC. Where in which again Khedira parted with Schweinsteiger allowed him to create.
Another example that is being showcased in 2020. Is that of James Rodriguez who is currently striving at that number 10 role, due to him having that protection behind him from the likes of an Allan and Doucoure.
It is noticeable that Ozil decline coincided along with Cazorla’s injury as around 2013-16. The three integral parts to that Arsenal team were the likes of Ozil,Sanchez and Cazorla. But as said previously the reason the team never amounted to major success was the general in mid.
Now since Ozil has been here name out of these lot who was an elite powerhouse DM who was Utilized in the right system and thrived throughout the entire campaign???
This is a guy who is ranked 4th in the all-time assist’s charts 21st century only behind Suarez, CR7 and Messi.I truly believe if he had stayed in Madrid he could’ve been top of the assists charts as he is 66 away. Also given the fact that he’s playing time has reduced since 2019
It’s sad to know that people not only in football but in the world in general love to highlight peoples weaknesses and flaws, as evident with Ozil not taking a pay cut, he has rights to know how and where the money is being utilised.
At the end of the day we have no right in telling anyone how to use their money. If anything, the person that should be held accountable is the person who is in charge of the institution. Ozil is one of the most charitable athletes currently and has done so much.
But because he earns “X” amount of money he is in the wrong.Let me tell you this in any job field if a higher was to give you a pay rise. Would you decline it, no? Arsenal board shot themselves on the foot with letting the players run down their contract similar to RVP, OX,Ramsey
As Arsenal fans we begged for a world class player to stay, and not leave us such as the likes of a RVP,Sanchez,Fabregas,Cole etc. Ozil stayed and yet he gets abuse because he doesn’t play, he earns x amount, as reiterated the club never used this opportunity to build around him.
Fast Forward to 2020, Ozil hasn’t featured for Arsenal this season as of yet.Hopefully with the acquisition of Powerhouse Partey in the midfield, along with solidity at the back with Gabriel, and plethora of attacking options he can still play vital role and aid with creativity.
This season Arsenal will not renew he's contract ending a 7yr relationship. He was arguably the biggest signing for Arsenal in the Emirates Era and started this catalyst of other world class players arriving. I hope he gets a fitting farewell. Ozil: The Last Dance 2020/2021.
