Little lesson on consumerism during pandemic:

The downside of picking up your groceries: They alert you that they have no Ball Park Franks available, then you have to go inside to pick up a couple of critical items you forgot to add to the list, swing by the meat section and

1/
I mean, seriously? This happens all the time. A common item they claim they& #39;re out of and I always say, "I bet if I went inside it would be there."

And you& #39;d be right!

2/
Here& #39;s my guess of how this works: they know they sell on average, say, 16 of Item X to in-store customers a day. They have 18 in stock, and get four pickup orders for it. First two pickeruppers get it, second two don& #39;t.

3/
So they preserve their shelf stock even if on that particular day they only sell 9 of it in-store.

This is a fantastic example of smart technology resulting in stupid decision-making.

4/
It& #39;s the equivalent of going to a high-end steakhouse and ordering your ribeye well-done. The chef is absolutely going to give you the shittiest cut he has, figuring you won& #39;t be able to tell the difference.

5/
And customers still insist on believing the service they receive is totally dependent on the variables inherent in the business model and is completely unrelated to their own behavior.

6/
I choose to pick up nearly all of our groceries because we feel safer doing so. But you have to accept the downsides of that decision -- as with everything in life.
