Thread: This story has been shopped for years. Yes the divorce paperwork uses this language. But that was catch-all language in 1979 Tennessee law, per attorney that represented Tillis’ ex-wife in divorce. “It’s usually just they didn’t get along really,” he said #ncpol #ncsen https://twitter.com/zach_hudson/status/1313886702684045319
I spoke in October 2018 with Richard Clark, who represented Tillis’ ex-wife in this divorce. He said he didn’t remember the case, but his name is on the paperwork. He’s also a former Tennessee lawmaker. These are direct quotes from my notes of that interview.
I dropped the story at that point. Fairly certain other reporters have done similar and that operatives have been pushing the story since Tillis’ first senate election. The initial paperwork sounds awful. But you shouldn’t just stop there, @American_Bridge
This is from the initial filing, which was dismissed
After the first case was dismissed, Tillis refiled. The divorce was granted a few months later
For those asking why I didn’t talk to Tillis’ ex-wife: I tried. My memory is that I left messages at several phone numbers to no avail, and the Dem source who pitched the story said they’d had no better luck.
