Monday night Council was presented with options for expansion of the cemetery. Most options, including the one favored by the Cemetery Committee and Council, included a designated Muslim burial section to accommodate specific burial rites that are part of the Islamic faith. 2/5
Predictably, some of my opponent's supporters posted in local Facebook groups trying to make a campaign issue of this. One particularly hateful post said this was the work of "the fascist mayor and his merry band of losers" & added some profane and horribly bigoted language. 3/5
Interestingly, the Council's direction wasn't a policy shift--as far as I know, our cemetery has had a Muslim section since before the city acquired it. The new section would simply be an extension of what already exists. 4/5
As long as I'm mayor, I'll be the mayor for ALL. Ensuring everyone has a place in our community to be honored in death, according to their beliefs, is an important way we commit to being a great place to live, learn, work and play for all, through every stage of life. 5/5
