You probably know this story.

A little shepherd boy brings down a giant with only a sling and a stone.

Israel is saved by the most unlikely hero.

Iโ€™m not going to rehash the whole story...

If you have a religious background

Youโ€™ve probably heard this story 100 times and heard countless sermons about it

But even so, I think this story contains several pieces of wisdom that are worth reviewing.

Ready?

Letโ€™s go

Everyone loves a good underdog story.

Well, the story of David is just that.

David did not look like a warrior.

He is described in the story as only a youth, with a โ€œfair countenanceโ€
David was a pretty boy.

Handsome, young, no battle scars

Not the type youโ€™d think to send out to face your enemyโ€™s champion fighter.

And even Davidโ€™s family didnโ€™t seem to believe in him

Davidโ€™s father overlooked him not once, but at least 2 times
Thereโ€™s a story that precedes David and Goliath, where Samuel came to Davidโ€™s fatherโ€™s house to anoint a king

He asked Davidโ€™s father, Jesse, to bring out all his sons

Jesse didnโ€™t even bother calling David in from the fields
Yet the prophet did not find the king among the sons Jesse had brought together.

David was finally called back from the fields and anointed king.

Later on, when the war in which the battle of David and Goliath would take place started
Davidโ€™s brothers, not him, were sent out to fight

Once again David was left in the fields, tending to his sheep

His father did not have the vision to see what David would become.

In your life, you may feel a pull towards greatness

If others, even loved ones, canโ€™t see it
Do not let this discourage you.

Others may count you out, but..

Nothing can hold you back from destiny.

We donโ€™t hear much about David before the battle with Goliath

So does that mean all the years before this great victory were wasted?

Not at all.
You see, it was in those years as a shepherd

Protecting his flock

That David learned to fight.

This is when he perfected his skills with a sling and a stone
David was building strength during this time.

We tend to think of shepherds as an easy, laid-back, โ€œsafeโ€ job

The reality is that shepherds in ancient times faced great dangers

Lions, bears, wolves, and other predators were always a legitimate concern
Davidโ€™s years spent protecting his flock prepared him for battle and gave him the confidence needed to step out onto that field.

David would later tell King Saul,

โ€œYour servant has been keeping his fatherโ€™s sheep.
When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,

I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth.
When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.

Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear

David stepped out onto that field because of what he believed in.

For 40 days Goliath had come out every morning to mock the armies of Israel
Goliath would curse Davidโ€™s people and his God

It was with righteous indignation that David would rise up and ask,

โ€œWho is this man that he should defy the armies of the living God?โ€

And so David decided that he would fight and see his enemy vanquished
Fight for what you believe in.

The culture is shifting rapidly

Immorality is praised as โ€œthe good lifeโ€

Indulgence is praised as if itโ€™s a virtue

And the media would have you believe that any effort to improve yourself and your station in life is a waste of time
The worldโ€™s just going down the toilet, right?

Only if we let it.

Fight for what you believe in.

When King Saul heard that David intended to fight Goliath, he summoned him.

After David arrived, Saul dressed him in his own clothes and armor
Perhaps Saulโ€™s intent was to help David be more protected.

Some have speculated Saul was trying to make David look like him so that he would be credited with the victory if David won
Whatever the reason, David tried walking in Saulโ€™s armor and quickly realized he could not fight wearing it.

So David shed the kingโ€™s armor, and set off to fight Goliath

David recognized that he could not win this battle by trying to be something he was not
Likewise, in our own lives

We will not find success if we are letting others decide who we are

We are all different, created uniquely and put on this planet for a reason

There will always be people trying to get you to โ€œwear their armorโ€
But the way of others may not be your path.

Be who you are.

Be yourself.

This world doesnโ€™t need any copycats

It does not need another Tony Robbins, Warren Buffett, or Elon Musk

What it does need is you.

So be who you are.

Stay committed to your vision
Do not allow others to try and fit you into a mold

You will only be successful in your mission

If you live as the person you were created to be.
