for example: the things he did for literacy and education on the island were literally incredible but ultimately he betrayed his own ideals by keeping the internet from the people for so long, which is the modern equivalent of batista keeping the people illiterate

he also like, fully put people in jail for being gay or for protesting or for like, drawing a rude cartoon of him. that said the US fucks with plenty of authoritarian rulers who do the same thing so our policy toward the island is, and always has been, completely psychotic.

also if you were to go there you'd see that wealth inequality is alive and well between government officials who have literal hillside mansions and average citizens who have to use a bucket to flush the toilet.
