#Freshers #Resume #Presentations

Interviews, Presentations, Tech Talks etc are great sources of information and fun as well. Meeting myriads of people over last couple of decades, one can't help, but slot them into different characteristics.

Short thread on common traits

1/
1. Jargons, Jargons, Jargons

People try to load their resumes and presentations with so many jargons, one starts to search for amoeba in an ocean.

Jargons are dropped to appear knowledgeable, cool, informed, technically suave etc..

2/
The comedy or irony of this is that the fake act usually lands up being caught .. ok.. more often than not..

Cardinal rule : Don't ever put one word on a presentation or resume that you can't justify. Never.

3/
2. False Promises

Claiming stuff that one has absolutely no clue about. Working on a Linux terminal doesn't entail you to claim that you know Linux.

I have seen resumes which were xerox copies of mine.. trust me.. this is absolutely true...

4/
I was fascinated that I will meet someone with such diverse spread only to find that they were advised to put that by consultants.

Remember they don't face interviews.. you do.. Don't claim anything falsely.. Never do this mistake.. Can do a lot of damage in long term

5/
3. Wise Cracks

These are special species of candidates / presenters who think that people in front of them (read Interviewers / Audience) are fools.

The pride themselves to be enlightened way above others that the demeanor becomes condescending

6/
Hello... Wise Soul.. Please don't ever make Assumptions.. The person in front of you may know lot more about the stuff than you can even fathom about

One real life incident: A guy from a reputed institute lands up for interview. The interviewer is a very senior professional

7/
He checks about the project etc. Candidate being his usual cocky-self replies "Oh you may not know this field.. it's computational geometry"

The interviewer says : "Oh nice.. I have some experience.. may I ask a couple of dumb questions"

8/
5 mins later, the candidate is begging to be let out.

Interviewer was a Ph.D on Computational Geometry from IISc and taught classes there sporadically.

Never make the mistake of considering the person opposite you to be a fool

9/
4. Pretentious Pompous Wanna-be

Oh I have met tons of these in my career. They put up appearances as if they have descended from US in the last flight.. with full accent (ok I am not biased, just against pretentions).

10/
2 mins.. you will be thinking... Ayyo .. Thara local person.. Happened with me during campus visits..

Don't be something that you are not.. Don't be ashamed to be what you are .. Just be the individual you are..

11/
5. Slide Readers

Penultimate part: This is another special category of individuals who will literally read the slide in presentations..

Yes.. I endure this even today.. Occupational Hazard .. but serious put-off at times..

12/
Understand what you are talking about.. Extempore is far more valued than just reading out what's on screen..

Hello .. anyone can read that.. can't they??

Be passionate about presentations.. They are the best sources to sell your skills and build visibility

Before I sign-off, a special mention to a person I respect a lot. In early 2000s, working on TI DSPs, I used to be active in multiple forums.

Jeff Brower is an icon I respect immensely even to this day. He wrote a beautiful letter / requirements for freshers which is...

14/
so relevant even today.. I would encourage everyone to kindly go through this link.. I will write about some of these stuff one of these days...
