Some key take-aways in @GretchenVogel1's terrific longread: 1) Scientists and doctors who criticized Sweden's relaxed approach to the pandemic were pilloried in the media and reprimanded. Dissent was not appreciated.

2) The fascination with the absence of a lockdown misses the point; Swedes reduced their contacts anyway. But many other policies were radically different from elsewhere in Europe - for instance on masks.

3) The policies came at a high price in human lives.

4) Sweden's stated goal was not herd immunity, but emails show top epidemiologists were very interested in it. They believed it would arrive quickly.

5) Sweden has recently (and sometimes quietly) brought its policies more in line with those in other European countries.
