Black women vote at comparatively high rates & had a higher voting rate than all other groups of men & women during the last two presidential elections. Yet we remain underrepresented at every level of federal & state political office.
More than 60% of Black women are in the workforce, making them one of the two racial/ethnic groups of women w/ the highest labor force participation rate. Yet our earnings lag behind most women’s & men’s earnings in the US.
Black families depend on Black women’s earnings. Over 80% of Black mothers are breadwinners. Yet many have caregiving responsibilities for an elderly parent, a person with a disability, or a young child, which we must balance with work obligations.
While health insurance coverage rates have increased substantially due to the Affordable Care Act, 16.5% of non-elderly Black women in the US still lacked coverage as of 2014.
Black women of all ages were twice as likely to be imprisoned as White women in 2014. Among young women, the disparity is especially pronounced: Black women aged 18-19 are 4 times as likely to be imprisoned as White women of the same age.
Black women experience poverty at higher rates than Black men & women from all other racial/ethnic groups except Native American women.
