A thread about cursing titled "Curse words aren't magical"

So by now many of heard about the controversy regarding Jeff Durbin, and many are arguing about the definition of skubalon, and the validity of talking like a prophet of old….
…but I don’t actually think that’s really where the fight is. Is a curse word automatically “corrupting talk?” I don’t see any reason to believe it is. The sounds are just sounds and the words are just words…
…what matters is the heart. What matters is the intention. Did the word come from a corrupt heart? Well frankly I cannot imagine why you would think that in this context given what Jeff actually said…
…Here is an example from me – in one of my videos I quote 2 hip hop songs. “Money Cash Hoes” and “Fuck the Police” Was this corrupting talk? Well it depends. Why was I quoting them?...
...The reason was because Eric Mason made a statement in his book #WokeChurch that Hip Hop had done more good for race relations that the church of Jesus Christ. So I quoted examples of this movement specifically to demonstrate how absurd this claim was…
…Could I have censored them? Sure I could have. But I thought the point would be made more clear by not censoring them so I didn’t. The language and heart behind it demonstrated the absurdity very well. Theres a little inside a baseball for you…
…you don’t have to agree with the strategy and many didn’t. Many thought I could make the same strong point by saying “eff the police” and “money, cash, women”, I disagree. But did uttering the words of someone else completely out of context to make a point corrupt me?...
…personally I think that is a very weird position to take and frankly gives the words way too much power in an of themselves…
…I am very sympathetic to the criticism of the strategic value of what Jeff did. You guys might be right. I don’t doubt that. I am also sympathetic to the people who says it’s a distraction bc now were talking about cursing instead of the woke church…
…I’m a Calvinist so I don’t buy that. I think this is a conversation that needs to be had. We’re in the fight of our lives here and we need to use all the tools available to us. The legitimacy of this tool is an important conversation to have…
…Allow me to take it out of context a minute. Did you know a well placed, aggressive and loud curse word can stop a would-be criminal in his tracks? A curse word, properly timed can stop you or someone else from getting injured or worse and can stop a fight before it happens…
…is that strategy off the table for a Christian? Does the word itself corrupt outside of a heart thats driving its usage in a corrupting way?I dont think so.We have far too many examples in the Scripture for me 2 buy that. So,as I said in the beginning, it comes down to the why.
I appreciate everyone whos pushing back on this. If im wrong I want to change my belief. I dont think I am, but I love you guys. Sincerely, Nehemiah. (dont make me pull out your beards)
